The Mixer Brush is a tool for when an artist needs the brush color to interact with the color already on the canvas, rather than just laying down another flat layer of color. Photoshop simulates two components of a real brush: a color reservoir loaded into the brush and a pickup well that takes color from the canvas. Wet, Load, Mix, and Flow determine how these two color sources affect the stroke.
Understanding these four parameters helps artists avoid two common extremes: the brush behaving almost like the regular Brush Tool, or the color being over-mixed into a muddy, shapeless area. This article builds a workflow based on specific tasks: block-in, skin color transitions, hair, fabric, materials, and edge control.

The Brush Tool primarily places the foreground color onto the canvas. The Smudge Tool pushes and pulls existing color. The Mixer Brush can both carry color in the brush and pick up color from the canvas, blending the two sources within a single stroke. This gives it a feel closer to a wet brush, a brush loaded with paint, or a clean brush pulling color.
The Mixer Brush does not automatically create an "oil paint" look with just one preset. The result also depends on the brush tip, texture, stroke direction, pen pressure, background color, and how the artist maintains or loses edges. The tool only provides the blending mechanism; decisions about form remain with the artist.

Adobe describes the Mixer Brush as having a reservoir and a pickup well. The reservoir is the color loaded into the brush. The pickup well is the part that receives color from the canvas as the stroke moves. Wet controls the pickup of color from the canvas, Load controls the amount of color in the reservoir, and Mix determines the ratio between the two sources.
Understanding this model allows artists to diagnose problems faster. The brush running out of color too soon is largely related to Load. The brush pulling canvas color too strongly is related to Wet and Mix. New color laying down too thickly is related to Flow, Load, and pen pressure.
To load color from the canvas into the Mixer Brush, hold Alt on Windows or Option on macOS and click on the desired color area. This action loads that color sample into the brush. When needing to load an area with multiple colors instead of a flat color, the artist can choose an appropriate sampling method in the Mixer Brush's Load controls.
Active color loading is more important than constantly opening the Color Picker. When blending skin or hair, picking up color from a nearby area helps maintain existing color relationships and avoids introducing an out-of-context color into the stroke.
Wet controls the amount of color the Mixer Brush picks up from the canvas. As Wet increases, the brush tends to drag existing color along its path longer. When Wet is low, the stroke depends more on the color currently in the reservoir.
High Wet does not automatically mean good blending. If a form requires sharp edges, too much Wet can pull lights and darks together, losing structure. If transition areas are too hard, too low Wet means the stroke only adds more color without blending with the background.
Create two color patches next to each other on a test layer. Load a color into the brush and drag across the boundary with different Wet levels. Observe three factors: how far the canvas color is dragged, how long the brush color lasts, and how quickly the boundary disappears. Choose the level based on the stroke's job, not a generic number.

Load is the amount of color available in the reservoir. High Load allows the brush to continue outputting the loaded color over a longer distance. Low Load causes the brush to "run out" quickly, after which the effect of the canvas color becomes more prominent if Wet is active.
During block-in, artists typically need enough color in the brush to lay down clear masses. During gentle blending, an overly full reservoir can cause new color to overwhelm the existing transition. Adjust Load together with Wet, not as independent parameters.

Mix determines the ratio between the color taken from the canvas and the color in the reservoir. At one extreme, the stroke relies primarily on the loaded color. At the other extreme, the stroke relies primarily on the color picked up from the canvas. Wet is still necessary for the brush to actually receive color from the surface.
High Mix is useful when the goal is to harmonize existing colors. Low Mix is suitable when the artist wants the loaded color to dominate but still needs some interaction with the background. When colors become gray and lose vibrancy, reducing the blend level or cleaning the brush before a new stroke is often more effective than continuing to stir.
Flow controls the rate at which color is output during the stroke. Low Flow allows color to be built up gradually over multiple passes. High Flow creates a quicker, more pronounced impact. If Flow is linked to pen pressure, hand pressure also changes the amount of color applied.
Low Flow does not automatically create smooth transitions; many repeated strokes in the same spot can still cause muddiness. High Flow is not necessarily a problem if the artist is block-in with hard edges. Choose based on the mass goal, then check the image at full size.
Load Brush loads color into the reservoir. Clean Brush cleans the color currently in the brush. These two actions are part of the painting rhythm, similar to rinsing a brush and picking up new paint in traditional painting.
When transitioning from a dark, saturated color to a clean, light area, clean the brush or load a suitable color. If you keep using a brush carrying the old mixture, the light area can easily become gray and the entire painting loses vibrancy.
Photoshop has options to automatically load or clean the brush after each stroke. Auto Load is useful when each stroke needs to start with a similar amount of color. Auto Clean is useful when you want strokes not to carry over mixtures from the previous stroke. However, a blending workflow might require keeping color across multiple strokes, so these should not be enabled out of habit without considering the goal.

When Sample All Layers is enabled, the Mixer Brush samples from all visible layers instead of just the current layer. The artist can create an empty layer above the base color, enable Sample All Layers, and apply blending strokes on the new layer. This allows experimentation without directly modifying the original pixels.
This is a flexible workflow, but not entirely "risk-free." If the effect layer is too strong, the image can still look muddy when viewed as a whole. Name layers clearly, use masks or local erasing, and compare before/after by toggling the layer visibility.
If the artist wants the Mixer Brush to interact only with a specific area, sampling the entire canvas could pull color from the background, lineart, or other effects. In that case, temporarily merging related layers into a Smart Object or working on a copy within a controlled group can be more predictable.
There is no single correct set of Wet–Load–Mix–Flow values for every brush, canvas size, and material. Build presets based on the task, but treat them as starting points for testing. Each preset should be tried with a series of strokes before using it on the main artwork.
The job of block-in is to place clear color and value masses. Therefore, the brush needs to hold reservoir color well, pick up less canvas color, and have sufficient Flow to create decisive masses. If the stroke starts blending too early, reduce Wet or Mix. If the color runs out before completing a mass, increase Load or reload the brush.
The job of skin blending is to soften certain transitions while still preserving planes, nostrils, eyelids, lips, and shadow cores. Use a brush that picks up just enough canvas color, with controlled Flow, and frequently clean or reload color from nearby areas. Do not sweep the brush across the entire face in random circular motions.
Fabric requires distinguishing fold edges, light-receiving planes, and soft transition areas. Use a less-blending configuration for the main edges, then a more blending configuration for transition areas. Trying to use one preset for both will make fabric folds either too hard or dissolve into a blurry mess.

Hair should be handled in large masses before small strands. The Mixer Brush is suitable for blending light-dark masses and creating brush strokes that follow the hair direction. Then use the Brush Tool or a less-blending Mixer Brush to place edges and accent strands. Do not blend every lock to the same smoothness.
Areas needing soft edges use a brush that picks up more canvas color and has a lighter Flow. Hard edge areas need clear reservoir color, with less pulling of background color. A lost edge is not a blurry smear; it is where two areas have values or colors close enough that the boundary temporarily disappears.
